ISO/IEC 27000 Family of  Standards Explained

The ISO/IEC 27000-series is a family of standards that consists of information security standards published jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is most commonly referred to as the ISMS Family of Standards of ISO 27000 family of standards.

The main standard within the series is ISO 27001. ISO 27001 sets out requirements for an ISMS. This standard is the only standard in the series which you can seek certification to.

The series of standards provides the best practice recommendations on information security management, hence why it is called ISMS (information security management system standard). The standard is designed to align with other management standards such as ISO 9000 series (quality management standards) and ISO 14000 series (environmental management standards). This allows for integration of multiple standards.

The series is intentionally broad in scope. It covers more than privacy, confidentiality and IT/technical/cybersecurity issues. ISO standards are designed to be applicable to organizations across all industries and all sizes. The goal of the series is to have organizations identify their information risks and then treat them.

The standards are the product of ISO/IEC JTC1 (Joint Technical Committee 1) SC27 (Subcommittee 27), an international body that meets in person twice a year.
